Getting to Work: Reconnecting Jobs With Transit, by New Jersey Future Research Director Tim Evans, analyzes the distribution of employment in the Garden State since 1980 and finds that as jobs shifted from the cities to the suburbs, commute times rose by more than 20 percent. The report calls for a reduction of commuter frustration and stress by employing strategies to link job sites with public transportation. The decentralization of employment, the report explains, has aggravated traffic by scattering commuter destinations, causing fewer workers to use public transit and resulting in more workers commuting to work alone. www.nhi.org/go/transit
Project Reach Out: Building Effective Partnerships Between the Public Workforce System and Faith-based and Community Organizations, the result of a long-term collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor and Seedco, is a downloadable toolkit designed to provide direction on how workforce investment boards, faith-based community organizations, and one-stop operators develop partnerships in order to improve one-stop customers. www.nhi.org/go/seedco
National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program: Congressional Update, released in October by NeighborWorks America, follows the activity of the $180 million National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling (NFMC) Program as part of the FY 2008 Consolidated Appropriations Bill signed in December 2007. Highlights of the report include the finding that 105,000 borrowers received counseling in all 50 states and that more than 2,500 foreclosure counselors were trained. The report also offers data about clients served through the program and the characteristics of their loans. www.nhi.org/go/nfmc
